> Yes. Google shows ads above and below AI Overviews, and inside them in some English-language markets, labelled as sponsored. Paying for ads is not a documented route to being cited in the AI answer.

Which ads you see depends on where you search. Google says ads above and below an AI Overview can run in every market that has AI Overviews, while ads inside the overview itself are limited to English in a named list of countries. Everything below comes from Google's own Ads Help page and announcements, and we say so where Google is silent.

If you want the basics of the feature first, see [what are Google AI Overviews](/what-are-google-ai-overviews/).

## Where ads can appear, according to Google

Google Ads Help describes two placements:

| Placement | Where Google says it runs | What Google says is eligible |
|---|---|---|
| Above or below the AI Overview | All 200+ markets where AI Overviews are available | Existing text, shopping, local or app ads in Search, Shopping, Performance Max and App campaigns |
| Within the AI Overview | English, on mobile and desktop, in Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore and the US | Text and Shopping ads from existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns |

The UK was not on the list for ads within AI Overviews when we checked the Help page on 18 October 2026. Google has expanded the list before, so check the page itself before you plan around it.

The timeline, as Google announced it:

- **3 October 2024:** Google said ads in AI Overviews were "now available for mobile users in the US" after several months of testing.
- **21 May 2025:** Google said Search and Shopping ads in AI Overviews were expanding to desktop in the US, and that later that year it would expand them in English to select countries on mobile and desktop.

Google also says it currently does not show ads in AI Overviews for sensitive verticals "like adult, alcohol, gambling, finance, healthcare, politics, and more".

On labelling, Google's 2024 announcement says these ads "will continue to feature our industry-leading clear and transparent 'Sponsored' label". So an ad inside an AI Overview sits in the same box as the AI-written text, but it is marked as paid.

## How an advertiser gets into AI Overviews and AI Mode

There is no separate product to buy. Google says ads from existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns "that are able to win the auction and address both the query and the information in the AI Overview are automatically eligible".

Google names three conditions for an ad to show within an overview:

1. Google detects commercial intent in the journey, even if the query itself is not obviously commercial. Its example is someone asking why their pool is green, then seeing ads for pool vacuums.
2. Google has quality ads relevant to the query.
3. The ad is also relevant to the content of the AI Overview.

Because AI Overviews tend to appear on long, question-style searches that advertisers rarely bid on, Google says it "requires AI-powered targeting solutions like broad match on Search or the keywordless targeting technology available through AI Max for Search campaigns, Performance Max campaigns, Shopping campaigns, or Dynamic Search Ads". It also recommends Smart Bidding and, for retailers, keeping product feeds complete and current.

## What advertisers can and cannot control

The FAQ on Google's Help page is unusually direct:

- **Targeting:** "No, you can't directly target ad placements in the AI Overviews."
- **Opting out:** "No, you can't opt out of serving ads in AI Overviews."
- **Reporting:** Google Ads "currently doesn't offer segmented reporting" when ads show within AI Overviews. These ads are reported as Top Ads.
- **Placement:** Google says it uses "existing signals and systems" to decide whether an ad shows above, below or within the overview.

What you still control is everything around the auction: which campaign types you run, your match types and bidding, your ads and creative, your product feed, your landing pages and your budget.

## Do ads change which sites the AI answer cites?

Google has not documented any link, so treat any claim that ad spend earns citations as unproven.

Google's Search Central documentation sets out what a page needs to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode: it "must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet", and "there are no additional technical requirements". It does not mention advertising at all.

The Ads Help page describes the relationship in one direction only. Ads are matched to the query and to the AI Overview's content, so the answer shapes which ads appear. Google does not say ads shape the answer. A sponsored ad and a cited source are two separate things that can sit in the same box.

For the organic side, [how to rank in Google AI Overviews](/how-to-rank-in-google-ai-overviews/) goes into what Google does document, and the [how AI answers happen](/#how-it-works) section of our main guide covers how answers get built.

## Ads in AI Mode

In its May 2025 announcement Google said it was "starting to test ads in AI Mode", and that "where relevant, ads may appear below and integrated into AI Mode responses". It said advertisers already using Performance Max, Shopping and Search campaigns with broad match, including AI Max for Search, would be eligible for ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Google's "Ads in AI Mode" page for advertisers now says it is testing new formats for 2026, "integrated directly into AI-generated responses" while "clearly labeled" as ads, and powered by AI Max and Performance Max.

None of the Google pages we read gave a list of markets for AI Mode ads, and the Google Ads Help section on ads in AI-powered experiences contained only the AI Overviews article when we checked. So we are not stating where AI Mode ads run. If AI Mode matters to your organic work, see [Google AI Mode SEO](/google-ai-mode-seo/).

## What this means if you run ads

1. **Check what you already run.** If you use Search with broad match or AI Max, Shopping or Performance Max, Google treats you as eligible already. There is nothing extra to switch on, and nothing to switch off.
2. **Check your market.** Ads inside the overview only apply in the listed countries, in English. Elsewhere, the relevant placements are above and below.
3. **Do not promise the placement.** You cannot target it, and Google decides when it appears. Avoid telling a client or a manager that you will get them into AI Overviews.
4. **Report what you can measure.** These ads count as Top Ads with no separate breakdown, so judge campaigns on clicks, conversions and cost per result. Do not estimate an AI Overview share in a report.
5. **Look after the basics.** Google's own advice for this placement is complete product feeds and good landing pages, which was already sound practice.

## What this means if you rely on organic visibility

Ads and citations are separate systems, and the route to being a supporting link is the organic one Google documents: be crawlable, indexed and eligible for a snippet, and publish content that answers the question well. That is our recommendation as well as Google's guidance.

It is reasonable to expect that ads in or around an overview compete for the same attention as the links inside it, but Google publishes no figures on how much. Search Console does not separate AI Overview traffic out either, so [how to track AI Overviews](/how-to-track-ai-overviews/) explains what you can and cannot measure.

## Claims about ads in AI Overviews to treat with care

- **Percentages from agencies and social posts.** You will see figures about how often ads appear in AI Overviews or lose their usual position. We have not repeated any, because none we found linked to a primary source. If a number has no published method, treat it as unverified.
- **Google's own performance claims.** Google says people find ads within AI Overviews helpful, citing "Google internal data, 2024". That is Google's claim about its own product, and the methodology is not published.
- **"Pay to be cited" offers.** Anyone who says ad spend or a paid service will get your site cited in an AI Overview is claiming something Google does not document. Nobody can guarantee inclusion.

## Questions people ask

### Are there ads in Google AI Overviews?

Yes. Google Ads Help says ads can show above, below or within AI Overviews. Ads inside the overview are limited to English in a named list of countries, and Google says they carry a "Sponsored" label.

### Can I pay to be included in an AI Overview?

You can pay for an ad that may show in or around an AI Overview, but you cannot target that placement directly. Google documents no paid route into the AI-written answer or its supporting links.

### Do I need a separate campaign to show ads in AI Overviews?

No. Google says ads from existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are automatically eligible if they win the auction and fit both the query and the overview's content. It also says AI-powered targeting such as broad match or AI Max is required to match them.

### Are there ads in Google AI Mode?

Google announced tests of ads in AI Mode in May 2025 and says it is testing new ad formats in AI Mode in 2026, integrated into responses and labelled as ads. The Google pages we checked did not list markets for AI Mode ads.

### Does buying ads make my site more likely to be cited in an AI answer?

Google has not documented any link between the two. Search Central says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a supporting link, with no additional technical requirements.
